As you drive from Pelwatta towards Passara, a limestone cave lies next to the road between the 12th and 13th km posts. This limestone cave is known as the Ravana Guhawa by the locals.
According to legend, 5000 years ago this area was the home to Kumbakarna. He was the brother of King Ravana and also the minister in charge of Agriculture. He is said to have built an underground tunnel to carry water from the Ranugalla to a temple called Gerandikathina Viharaya. It is said that this cave is the Ranugalla entrance to this ancient underground waterway.
This cave now has been blocked by filling the earth and may be destroyed in the near future with the widening of the road.
