Sangaman Kanda lies between Akkaraipattu and Komari, the Sangaman Kanda rock plateau (Sangamankanda) lies close to the main A5 highway. This village is more popular for the Sangaman Kanda Point where the most eastern edge of Sri Lanka lies. There is also a now broken lighthouse marking the exact point on the beach.

On a rocky outcrop, a few meters away from the road in Sangaman Kanda, ruins of an ancient Buddhist monastery have been discovered. A dilapidated stupa lies at the top of the rock. Below this stupa at the bottom of the rock near the road lies a drip ledge cave with some cave art possibly belonging to indigenous Veddas.

No conservation or detailed archaeological study has been carried out of this once-Buddhist Monastery. The rock boulder with hillock covering stupa, ruins of buildings, prehistoric cave art, cave inscriptions and complex of drip ledged caves and other archaeological evidence around the rock was declared as a protected archaeological site under the Antiquities Ordinance Act on 10 October 2014 with the Gazette issued on 10th October 2014, and describes the location as follows ;

“The rock boulder called Sangaman Kanda with hillock covering chaitya, ruins of buildings, prehistoric cave art, cave inscriptions and complex of drip ledged caves and other archaeological evidence belonging to Sangaman Kanda village situated at Grama Niladhari Division No. P22 Sangaman Kanda in Divisional Secretary’s Division Pothuvil in Ampara District in Eastern Province. (latitude 07º 01′ 04.8” N and longitude 081º 50′ 53.3” E).”
