On the village of Mihindupura in Ampara lies ruins of a temple complex including a pillar inscription known as Udayapura Pillar Inscription of the ancient Digamadulu kingdom on the land known as the Pansalwattha.

The pillar inscription was placed during King Udaya IV (946-954 CE) of Anuradhapura Kingdom in medieval Sinhalese script. It states that this pillar inscription had been made on the 10th year of King Udaya IV on the month of Ill (October-November).

It mentions of a donation made to the Nilgala Vihara in Digamadulla. Valuable information is given about the administration of the Eastern Province and about many royal officers in the names of Sena, Bugala Radisendu, Vara Mekappar Mahame Kotta, Navaga Siridat, Sabhayepoth taranakala Agboya. Raksa and Ulvasikarana Pulata (Medhānanda, 2005)

This area of ruins  has been  declared a protected archaeological site by the Government with the Gazette issued on 10th October 2014, and describes the location as follows ;

“Udayapura Piller inscription with archaeological evidence in the surrounding area, rocks (with Chisel holing) and place where pieces of ancient pottery are scattered at the place called Pansalwatta belonging to Mihindupura village situated in Grama Niladhari Division No. W/89/N, Mihindupura in the Divisional Secretary’s Division Ampara in Ampara District in Eastern Province. (latitude 07º 17’35.8” N and longitude 081º 42′ 04.5”E).”
