On the eastern side of Buddhangala Monastery and the eastern border of the Buddhangala Sanctuary lies Walathapitiya Reservoir which supports a large area of paddy fields.  Ruins of some buildings of the ancient Digamadulu kingdom can be found to the southeast of the spill of the reservoir. The Walathapitiya Wewa bounds this area on the northwest, the waterway created by the spill (Pitawan Ela) on the southeast and paddy fields on the south and west. 

This area of ruins  has been  declared a protected archaeological site by the Government with the Gazette issued on 10th October 2014, and describes the location as follows ;

“The premises with stone pillars, relics of ancient bricks and pieces of tiles (premises bounded North-east by outer canal of Walathapitiya lake, South and West by paddy field, North-west by the bund of the lake) situated towards South-east from the spill of Walathapitiya lake belonging to Wilwewa village situated in the Grama Niladhari Division No. 89B, Walathapitiya 01 in the Divisional Secretary’s Division Sammanture in Ampara District in Eastern Province. (latitude 07º 19′ 23.5” N and longitude 081º 43′ 30.9”E).”
