Wembadikulama is an remote farming village southwest of the Sagama Reservoir on the Akkaraipattu – Sangaman road in the interior accessible only by gravel roads which pass through the Sagama Reservoir bund and through vast paddy fields reaching the horizon.  Ruins of an ancient Buddhist monastery has been discovered on the rock plains on the eastern edge of the Wembadikulama Forest Reservation. These ruins has been designated as a protected archaeological site by the Government with the Gazette issued on 10th October 2014, and describes the location as follows;

“Natural rock plain with flight of steps and base stones at the Eastern end of forest reservations situated in the village Wembeadikulam in Grama Niladhari Division No. 11C, Sagamam in the Divisional Secretary’s Division Thirukkovil in Ampara District in Eastern Province. (latitude 07º 05′ 42” N and longitude 081º 43′ 54” E).”

GPS location is marked based on the above description. However it is recommended to get directions to this place from a party familiar  with the area before attempting to visit the place. It is unlikely that you will get any assistance from the villagers who are predominately non Buddhists.  Unfortunately some of the extreme elements are already gradually destroying such remote heritage sites in order to erase any signs Buddhist civilization in the area in the past.
