In the remote village of Vilathalawa (Wilathalawa) in Mahaoya, a site containing slag has been identified in a paddy field near the Ibbige Ela canal. Mahaoya, known as the Digamadulla in ancient times reached the peak of its prosperity during the period of King Dutugemunu (161-131 BC) and his brother King Saddhatissa (137-119 BC). A large number of ruins of ancient Buddhist monasteries are found scattered all over this sub-kingdom.
A number of sites where smelting of iron from ore has been carried out have been found in the Digamadulla area. The most telltale indications of the smelting of iron are the deposits of slug, a glass-like substance which is a by-product of the smelting process.
-0-The site with deposits of slug in Vilathalawa has been declared a protected archaeological site by the Government with the Gazette issued on 10th October 2014, and describes the location as follows ;
“Place containing scattered slag within paddy land near Ibbige Ela (Latitude 07º 50540′ N and longitude 081º 27970′ E) belonging to Wilathalawa village situated in Grama Niladhari Division No. 144/A1, Iddapola in the Divisional Secretary’s Division Mahaoya in Ampara District in Eastern Province.”
