Kolongemmegoda rock plain lies in the remote village of Vilathalawa (Wilathalawa) in Mahaoya. Buddhist ruins of ancient stupa, granite pillars of buildings of the Digamadulla kingdom and stone tools of the prehistoric era have been discovered on this rock plain and was declared a protected archaeological site by the Government in the Gazette issued on 10th October 2014, and described the location as follows ;

“Kolongemmegoda rock plain with hillock of ancient Dagoba, ruins of buildings with stone pillars, ponds and sediments of stone tools of prehistoric era at Wilathalawa village (Latitude 07º 55420′ N and longitude 081º 27977′ E) situated in Grama Niladhari Division No. 144/A1, Iddapola in the Divisional Secretary’s Division Mahaoya in Ampara District in Eastern Province.”
