The Negombo Fish Market (මීගමුව ලෙල්ලම) is a bustling hub of activity located in the coastal city of Negombo, Sri Lanka. It is renowned for its vibrant atmosphere and the wide variety of fresh seafood available for sale. Fishermen bring in their catches from the Indian Ocean, and the market comes alive with the sights, sounds, and smells of the sea.

Visitors to the Negombo Fish Market can expect to see a vast array of seafood, including fish, prawns, crabs, lobsters, and squid, among others. The market offers a unique opportunity to witness the local fishing industry in action, as fishermen unload their boats and vendors display their catches for sale.

The market operates daily, starting at about 6 am and is functional till noon. However, activity starts here around 4–5 am when the fishing boats return with the day’s haul. The auctions start early morning with retail distributors, hotel suppliers etc, flocking to buy the best produce. As the day progresses, the market becomes less lively, with smaller vendors haggling over prices and customers selecting their preferred seafood.

One of the highlights of visiting the Negombo Fish Market is the chance to sample freshly prepared seafood dishes. Several stalls and eateries around the market offer delicious seafood meals, cooked to order and served hot off the grill.

Best Time to Visit Negombo Lellama Fish Market

The best time to visit the Market is around 5 am when you can see the hauls of fish being unloaded and sorted for auction. Then the hustle and bustle of the auction itself. Then around 8-9 am, the retail market starts picking upstream with local customers tricking in for their daily needs. The market is now filled with small-scale vendors to fulfil the needs of local customers. This fish market operates till about 12 pm.

The Dry Fish Market too lies close to the main wet fish market. This becomes busy around 9-11 am when the fish is laid back on sand for drying.
