King Edward VII, whose full name was Albert Edward, was born on November 9, 1841, and he reigned as the King of the United Kingdom and the British Dominions from January 22, 1901, until his death on May 6, 1910. He was the eldest son of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha.

King Edward VII’s coronation took place on August 9, 1902, following the death of his mother, Queen Victoria, in January 1901. Due to the traditional mourning period observed after the death of a monarch, Edward’s coronation was postponed for over a year.

While there’s limited information available about the celebration of King Edward VII’s coronation in Sri Lanka (then Ceylon), it’s evident that the island also marked the occasion on a grand scale, being a Dominion of the British Empire.

Along the Galle Road in front of the High Court Complex of Balapitiya lies a monument erected by the public to commemorate the coronation of King Edward VII on August 9, 1902. The monument is a pillar made of stone with a large square base with the side facing the road with the inscription.

Today it lies connected to the parapet wall of the High Court of Balapitiya and is not noticed by any of the hundreds of people who travel past it.
