The rocky outcrop known as “Pirith Kiyu Gala” (Pirithkiyu Gala) close to the Sri Jayasumanaramaya Viharaya in Hungamalagama consists of drip-ledged caves with inscriptions, ruins of ancient buildings including parts of granite pillars and signs of crucibles. This site was declared a protected archaeological site by the Government in the Gazette issued on 10th October 2014, and describes the location as follows ;
“229. Rock inscription and drip ledged cave complex in the nearby area within the lower area of Hungamalagama village (Latitude 07º 68988′ N and longitude 081º 00597′ E) situated in Grama Niladhari Division No. 142/K, Bakmeedeniya in the Divisional Secretary’s Division Dehiaththakandiya in Ampara District in Eastern Province.
230.Rock (Pirith Kiyu Gala) with sketches of humans, place containing pillar bases, signs of crucibles within the lower area of Hungamalagama village (Latitude 07º 68984′ N and longitude 081º 00590′ E) situated in Grama Niladhari Division No. 142/K, Bakmeedeniya in the Divisional Secretary’s Division, Dehiaththakandiya”
