Walpola Sri Wijayasundararamaya Tampita Viharaya is an ancient temple hidden just 3 km from Rambukkana.
One unique features a visitor could observe at this temple is the ancient Tampita Viharaya. Tampita Vihara were a popular architectural feature of temples during the Kandyan era. Tampita Vihara is built on a wooden platform assembled on granite pillars rising from the ground.
At the entrance of the Tampita Viharaya at the Walpola Sri Wijayasundararamaya you will find two statues guardian deities. A seated Buddha statues underneath a dragon’s arch (makara thorana) can be seen inside the image house. Two standing Buddha statues flank the main statue. The roof is tiled with flat clay tiles, typical on buildings of Kandyan era. A mandapaya has been built in front of this tampita viharaya.
The temple can be reached by travelling 4 km on the Rambukkana – Katupitiya road upto Hewadhiwela Junction and taking the Hewadhiwela for 1 km.
