The Hapuwalana Kshethrarama Tampita Viharaya is a 19th-century temple in Divulapitiya notable for its unique architectural layout. Facing a serene paddy field, the temple features an image house elevated on sixteen granite pillars, characteristic of the Kandyan period “temple on pillars” style.
Hapuwalana Kshethrarama Tampita Viharaya is an ancient temple situated in Divulapitiya within the Gampaha District, approximately 43 km (26.7 miles) from Colombo. Constructed in the 19th century, this Tampita Viharaya is set against the serene backdrop of a paddy field, towards which it directly faces.
Architectural Significance
One of the most distinctive features observable today is the preserved Tampita Vihara Ge. The Tampita Vihara was a prominent architectural form during the Kandyan period, widely adopted in temple construction of that era.
This particular Tampita Vihara Ge is elevated on a wooden platform supported by 16 granite pillars. Unlike many other such structures, it does not include a surrounding balustrade, which is typically a common feature in most Tampita Viharayas. The statues and frescoes housed within the image chamber are characteristic of the Kandyan artistic tradition.
Unique Structural Elements
A notable architectural variation is the presence of a mandapa constructed in front of the Tampita Viharaya. While such mandapas are generally designed as square halls, in this instance, it takes the form of a hexagonal structure, adding a distinctive element to the temple’s layout.
