Ruins found at Arasapuram are believed to be ruins of a fort of Queen Allirani by the locals. However, no formal archaeological excavation has been done on this site. These ruins most probably belonged to an ancient monastery built millennia ago.
There is no written history of the people of Iranaitivu, but the old Portuguese chronicles mention the fact that certain low-caste peoples were sent to the islands to look after the horses and it was primarily as cattle and horse watchers that the people existed. With the coming of the British, interest in horses for draught and cavalry purposes increased and horses were sometimes shipped to Iranaitivu for shipment.
In 1956 while cutting a road to an ancient reservoir at Uruthirapuram, this stupa mound has been discovered. Then the archaeological commissioner, P. E. P. Deraniyagala has published this site in the 1958 archaeology commissioners report. According to it, it has been reported that that an ancient stupa has been destroyed in Uruthirapuram in Northern Province.
Manniththalai is long stip of sandy land projecting out to the sea from mainland just below Jaffna peninsula. Another sand bar, Ariyalai runs in parallel to Manniththalai originating from the bottom of the Jaffna peninsula. This section of the land has coastal line of 45 kilometers covering 3 sides.
One of the popular stops in the Poonaryn Peninsula is the Sand Dunes of Kavutharimunai. Dunes form where the beach is wide enough to allow for the accumulation of wind-blown sand, and where prevailing onshore winds tend to blow sand inland.
The Ruins of the Kavutharimunai Shiva Kovil in Pooneryn lies about 9 km on the sandy land mass which stretch for over 22 km below Jaffna Peninsula. The kovil lies 500 meters away from the Kavutharimunai St. Anthony’s Church.
The Ruins of the Manniththalai Shiva Kovil in Pooneryn lies about 12 km on the sandy land mass which stretch for over 22 km below Jaffna Peninsula. The kovil lies 100 meters away from the Manniththalai Jetty.
The Kalmunei old Survey Tower lies at the furthest corner of sand bar below Jaffna peninsula. This % % % remote structure lies about 15 km away from the Pooneryn – Jaffna road.
This area was a stronghold of the LTTE for 30 years and was liberated in 2008. Now you canvisit some of the most significant remnants of a 30 year old bloody terrorist war which was never seen by the public.
This is an bulldozer with 1/2 inch thick armor plates right around it which was used by the LTTE terrorists to attach the Elephant Pass army camp in 1991. The Bulldozer was stopped by the solder called Hasalaka Gamini who jumped in with a hand grande.
Pooneryn Fort was built in the north portion of the island first by the Portuguese to protect its possessions in Jaffna, it was expanded by the Dutch till in 1770.
