If you take the lesser traveled route to Jaffna through Pooneryn, The old Survey Tower at Kalmunai is one of the remote points you could visit.
The Survey Tower lies at the furthest corner of sand bar below Jaffna peninsula. After about 5 km passing Pooneryn, turn on the Kawtharimunai road. This sandy road goes all the way past Kawtharimunai to edge of the sand bar. The total distance to the edge is about 15 km.
The road is not tared. The whole land mass is a sandy beach stretching to the horizon only disturbed by a remote house, church or a army check point.
Close to the Tower you will find a small church frequented by the Tamils living on this sand bar during Sundays. An army checkpoint indicates its strategic importance in protecting Jaffna. This tower was declared as a protected archaeological monument on 25 March 2016.
