A trigonometrical tower, also known as a trigonometric station or surveying tower, is a structure used in surveying and geodetic measurements to determine accurate positions and distances on the Earth’s surface. The purpose of a trigonometrical tower is to serve as a reference point for conducting triangulation surveys.

During the period of British colonial rule, survey towers were established in various parts of the world under British control for mapping, land surveying, and other purposes. These towers played a significant role in the British Empire’s efforts to survey and administer the territories it governed.

A damaged survey tower is found on the northern coast of Mannar Island unknown by many travellers. It lies off a bare strip of sand on a beach covered with thorny bushes. The tower stands on a square base. On top of it is two cylindrical segments, the top one smaller than the bottom. If it had a had a 3rd column at the top, it’s not visible now.

To reach the site, you need to travel 8 km from the Mannar Fort on the main Talaimanar road and turn right towards Alhaj Tharseen Nagar housing scheme. Turn right again passing Erukkalampiddy causeway and travel along the waterline for 500 meters. Turn left at the old Erukkalampiddy old divisional hospital and travel straight for 2 km to reach the beach. The tower lies about 100 meters to the left on the beach.
