Exiting from the Dambokka exit from the Central Expressway travelling past Pothuhera Junction for 2 km and turning left at Bewilgamuwa towards Sri Arambepola Walukarama Rajamaha Viharaya and travelling a further `1.5 km inwards, you will find the Pothuhera Arambepola Ambalama in middle of a lush paddy field.
An ambalama is a traditional resting place in Sri Lanka. Constructed by kings or elites of the area, they provide shelter for pilgrims, traders, and travellers. These simple structures offer respite during journeys and serve as meeting places for people.
Pothuhera Arambepola Ambalama is a square brick and mortar structure situated in the Handugala Grama Sewaka division within the Polgahawela District Secretariat of the Kurunegala District. The walls of the Ambalama are half-height and feature a built-in ledge around the perimeter for seating. The roof is supported by four wooden beams, which rest on four brick and mortar pillars.
The roof of the Pothuhera Arambepola Ambalama does not feature the Kenimadala design, which was typical of ambalams from the Kandyan era. Instead, the roof is supported by a central beam. This design element suggests that the Ambalama was constructed at a much later date than the traditional Kandyan-era ambalams.
