If you take the lesser travelled route to Jaffna through Pooneryn, there are a number of places which you could visit on the Sand Bar below the Jaffna Peninsula. This land mass is about 22 kilometres long. The road is not tarred. The whole land mass is a sandy beach stretching to the horizon only disturbed by a remote house, church or an army check point.

Ruins of old Shiva kovil can be found  9 km along the sandy road which lies just before the Sangupiddy bridge along the Pooneryn – Jaffna road. As you travel along this road you will come across a St. Anthony’s church and the sub-post office of Kavutharimunai.

Five hundred meters past the church you will come across a tiny road to the left which will lead to these ruins. The remains of this kovil is now being protected by a building covering this structure. There is another smaller ruined kovil building on the eastern side of this main Kovil.

The remains of this kovil was declared as a protected archaeological monument on 12 June 2015.

Alternate Names : Gawutharimunai, Kawtharimunai, kawutharimunai, Gawtharimunai, Kowtharimunai
