Out of the many ancient Buddhist sites in th remote Kotiyagala area, Miella Kanda (Myella Kanda) is one of the most known sites in the area. Close by lies another cave with Vedda art knowns as Hatharas Galge Cave few hundreds meters away from the rock.
There are ruins of more than a dozen stupas, over 15 caves with drip ledges and 6 pathana’s are spread over three hundred fifty acres in within the ruins of Nelugala in Batticaloa district.
Buduwawa Kanda ruined site is on the rock hill which extends over 800 meters from north to south. At the north slope of the rock hill, there are three rock shelters. At the north slope of the rock hill, there is a flight of steps leading to the ruins of stupa. The stupa is at the top of the rocky hill.
Hibitilandegala rock hill is 1.2 km long east to west and 146 meters high. Remains of 3 structures are found at the top of the hill and a pathaha. There are 4 pathahas and one rock shelter southern slope. There are remains of 4 undetermined structures and 2 pathahas on the north-western slope.
The archaeological site of Karagahaella lies on the low rock hill which extends over 150m from east to west and is about 2Om high. Here you find the remains of dagoba (A), one pataha (B), one structure (C) and a flight of steps (D), all of which are weathered very badly
A dagoba ,inscriptions, a uncertain structure are found on the eastern slope of the Dimbulagala Kanda mountain. Three rock shelters are found halfway up this mountain. A brick-built recumbent Buddha statue, a wooden statue and Brahmi inscriptions are seen in one rock shelter
There are two rock shelters (A and B) with drip ledges cut on to their brow, four pillar foundation stones (C), one uncertain structure (D). Restored temple is on the western part of the Rock shelter (A).
All the ancient monuments are preserved well, because the meditating Buddhist priests who occupy this site have restored them. Most of the rock shelters are used as cells or audience halls.
Wattegama is a large rocky mountain. There is another small hill near the main mountain. This ancient temple is built in the middle of these two hills. Wattegama Rajamaha Viharaya as a whole dates back to the early days of Ruhuna kingdom.
the ruins at Kudagoda Bavuma were found in middle of a banana field. This is a rectangular building 4.1 meters wide and 4.6 meters long. 10 stone pillars were located at the site with 6 standing, 2 lying and 2 broken.
Two rock shelters with drip ledges are found on the eastern slope of low rock hill called Kudagoda. A brick-built recumbent Buddha statue is seen in the rock shelter (A). No inscriptions are found at the site.
An archaeology team from Japan has discovered ruins of 3 stupas on 3 peaks and many other buildings at the Ali Besama site indicating that this area has been a populated areas during the Polonnaruwa period.
Ruins of a temple complex with on a large rock plateau found deep inside the jungles of Wasgamuwa. Remains of a stupa, rock cut stair cases and two rock caves with drip ledges are found here.

Malagomuwa Reservoir in Wasgamuwa contains the largest Bisokotuwa ever discovered measuring 370x320cm on the sides and a depth of 390cm or more.
Deep in the jungle inside Wasgamuwa lies a rock known as Pilimagala (meaning Rock of Buddha Statue) where carvings of 2 seated Buddha statues are found. Both statues lies close to each other carved in to the rock.
This site at Wewala has been a quite a large forest hermitage in the ancient past based on the number of drip-ledged caves found at the site. This a large low lying rock formation dotted with cave shelters.
Nuwaragalkanda archaeological site is located about 16 km east of the city of Dambulla, in a low mountain range which runs north-south through the Nuwaragalkanda area. Large and small buildings and irrigation facilities are built along a dried up stream between the main vein and the branch ridge.
The delta created by the 2 rivers at Dastota is covered in thick jungle since its inside the boundaries of a National Park. No research has been published on any ruins in the area around the Dastota Wewa except for a single place in the 1:50,000 inch map.
Kshetrarama Maha Viharaya at Lakshapathiya was established in 1829 by the chief monk, Ven. Weligama Sri Sumanatissa Thero. He resided at the Saranapala Maha Vihara in Walana during that period. Notable among the archaeological interests and monuments of the Vihara are the old Buddha shrine, the Seema Malakaya, and the Bhikkhu dwellings.
