Ruins of the Ancient Ruhuna Civilization – In the Jungles of Kumbukkan Oya Basin SRI LANKA.

The land mass between Monaragala and Yala’s northern border is filled with remote villages that mainly survive on paddy and Chena cultivations. Most of the land is covered in jungles and rock formations of various sizes and heights rise at various locations. At most of these rock formations, you will find remains of ancient Buddhist monasteries providing a glimpse of the past of this area. Most of the ruins are not even discovered but a research party headed by Takashi Okamura from Hosei University in Japan made 2 research visits in 1985 and 1993 and has documented a significant number of hidden ruins in this area.

From the Kodayanna Junction between Galebedda and Siyalanduwa, you need to travel 14km southwards through jungle patches and paddy fields to reach the ancient Wattegama Rajamaha Viharaya. About 500 meters before the temple there is a gravel road to the right which will lead you towards the rock formation called Moramal Hela. The site known as Kudagoda Bavuma lies a few hundred meters north of the Moramalhela. The site has been visited by the above team in 1985.

When the team went to investigate, the ruins were found in the middle of a banana cultivation. This is a rectangular building 4.1 meters wide and 4.6 meters long. 10 stone pillars were located at the site with 6 standing, 2 lying and 2 broken. The average stone pillar is about 28cm long, 22cm wide and 80cm high.

No further information on this site after the research was carried out in 1985 was found. The location marked on the Google map is approximate based on the map of the research team given below.
