Buduwawa Kanda is a small rocky area with ruins of a stupa at the top hidden in the jungles of Kotiyagala bordering Yala National Park in Monaragala District. Buduwawa Kanda is located 900 meters south-southwest of Kotiyagala. To reach the site, you need to proceed east for about 200 meters from Kotiyagala on a gravel road and turn towards south-southwest and travelling about 700 meters through paddy fields. This site is not marked on any map, thus you will need a local guide to trace this location using the map below.

The land mass between Monaragala and Yala northern border is filled with remote villages who mainly survive on paddy and Chena cultivations. Most of the land is covered in jungles and rock formations of various size an height rise at various locations. At most of these rock formations, you will find remains of ancient Buddhist monasteries providing a glimpse of the past of this area. Most of the ruins are not even reported but a research party headed by Takashi Okamura from Hosei University in Japan had made 2 research visits in 1985 and 1993 and has documented a significant number of hidden ruins in this area.

This ruined site is on the rock hill which extends over 800 meters from north to south. At the north slope of the rock hill, there are three rock shelters (A, B and C). At the north slope of the rock hill, there is a flight of steps (D) leading to the ruins of stupa (E). The stupa is at the top of the rocky hill. The stupa is weathered badly. The stupa is further damaged by treasure hunters with a large pit dug at the center. A stone pillar, possibly a part of the Yupa Gala of the stupa measuring 90cm in length and 27 cm in diameter is found by the ruins of the stupa.

Rock shelter (A) has a drip ledge cut at its brow and measures 16.5m wide, 3m high and 6.5m deep (see Photo A). Remains of 2 walls made of stone and clay is found inside the cave. These were measured at 1.5 meters long and 50cm thick. The other is semicircle shaped wall, measuring 1.5m in diameter, 40cm long and 50 cm high.

Rock shelter (B) lies on the northern slope of the rock hill, about 15m higher from the rock shelter (A). This too has a drip ledge cut beneath its brow (see Photo B). There are 2 inscriptions carved below the brow.
