Hidden deep within the jungles of Kotiyagala, bordering Yala National Park, Hibitilandegala is a small rocky outcrop crowned with the ruins of an ancient stupa. Remote and untouched, this mysterious site lies 8.4 km east of Kotiyagala and 4.5 km southeast of Dimbulagala Kanda.
To reach Hibitilandegala, travel northeast from Kotiyagala for about 3.2 km until you reach the Wila Oya riverbed. From there, continue another 5 km downstream, crossing a small concrete embankment, and then turn south-southeast for approximately 1 km to arrive at the site.
The vast stretch of land between Monaragala and the northern border of Yala is dotted with remote villages that depend largely on paddy and chena cultivation. Dense jungles dominate the landscape, interrupted by rocky outcrops of varying size and height. Many of these rocks conceal traces of ancient Buddhist monasteries, offering silent glimpses into the region’s forgotten history. While most of these ruins remain undocumented, research expeditions led by Takashi Okamura of Hosei University, Japan, in 1985 and 1993 revealed a remarkable number of hidden archaeological sites scattered across this wilderness.
Hibitilandegala Rock Hill is 1.2 km long from east to west and 146 meters high. The remains of 3 structures are found at the top of the hill (A, B, and C) and a pathaha (D). There are 4 pathahas (E, F, G, and I) and one rock shelter (H) on the southern slope. There are remains of 4 undetermined structures (J, K, L, and N) and 2 pathahas (M and O) on the northwestern slope. On the northern slope, you find one rock shelter (P) and four pathaha’s (Q,R,S and T).
At the summit of Hibitilandegala lies a collapsed brick structure measuring about 7 meters across and 50 centimeters high. At its center, a pit dug by treasure hunters has further damaged the remains. Although the structure is too deteriorated to be clearly identified, it is likely the remnants of an ancient stupa. About 25 meters northwest of this ruin stands another unidentified building (B), while structure (C) is located roughly 20 meters further northwest, suggesting the peak once supported a small but significant cluster of sacred constructions.
