Karagahaella rocky plateau is situated 1.5 kilometers south-southeast of Dimbulagala Kanda Monastery amidst paddy fields in the village of Kotiyagala in Monaragala.
The land area between Monaragala and Yala northern border is filled with remote villages who mainly survive on paddy and Chena cultivations. Most of the land is covered in jungles and rock formations of various size an height rise at various locations. At most of these rock formations, you will find remains of ancient Buddhist monasteries providing a glimpse of the past of this area. Most of the ruins are not even reported but a research party headed by Takashi Okamura from Hosei University in Japan had made 2 research visits in 1985 and 1993 and has documented a significant number of hidden ruins in this area.
The archaeological site is on the low rock hill which extends over 150m from east to west and is about 2Om high. Here you find the remains of dagoba (A), one
pataha (B), one structure (C) and a flight of steps (D), all of which are weathered very badly.
The ruined stupa measures 10 meters in diameter and 2 meters in height. It has been plundered by treasure hunters. There are 2 stone slabs around the stupa. One is found at the northern slope (100cm long, 93cm wide and 10cm thick), and the other is found on the western slope (72cm long, 73cm wide and 18cm thick). there is an unknown circular stone plate buried in the soil (see Fig. a-1).
