Traveling from Vavuniya and passing Mahakachchakodiya you will come across the unique Erupothana Reservoir. The Erupothana Rock lying right along the road next to the reservoir. Next to the Erupothana rock, lies the Kimbulagala Rock which contains more Buddhist ruins.
Erupothana is a historically important location in the Sri Lankan annals being the birth place of Nandimithra, one of the ten giant warriors of King Dutugemunu (161-131 BC).

Mahakachchakodiya Purana Gallen Rajamaha Viharaya lies on an ancient monastic ruined ground sandwiched between Mahakachchakodiya reservoir and a hillock among the lush green paddy fields.
According to Parker Vavunikulama Reservoir was built in the 3rd centaury BC. He reports when the reservoir was full the water covered an extent of 1975 acres, and the tank then had a capacity of 596 million cubic feet. The embankment is 13,350 feet or 2.5 miles (4 km) long.
The construction of the Vavuniya Madukanda Viharaya started during the era of Nandimitra, a general of King Dutugemunu (161-131 BC). 58 Rock Inscriptions dating from 2nd century BC to 12th century has been discovered in this area indicating that Madukanda has been flourishing Buddhist Monastery for over 1400 years
