Hidden amidst the lush hills near Welimada, Bomburu Ella Falls cascades in multiple shimmering streams, creating a breathtaking natural spectacle. As the widest waterfall in Sri Lanka, its roaring beauty, misty spray, and tranquil forest setting make it a must-visit haven for nature lovers and photographers.
This 3m tall Bo Ella Fall is served by a minor bo (Ficus religiosa) leaf-shaped stream (formed by the Ma Oya ) that begins in the Aranayake Rassawa Mountain, and also serves the Ahupini Falls.
Folklore says that the concubines of Sri Lanka’s ancient King Mayadunne bathed and frolicked in the Bisodola Ella at Eheliyagoda thus the name.
The 9m Berry’s Falls is situated in the Monaragala District, in the Bibile Provincial Secretariat in Karagahawela GS area in Helgama.
There are several falls located along trek to the 8m Beraliya Dola Ella Falls. The fall springs from the declivity of the Sinharaja Forest.
This waterfall is one of the many waterfall hidden inside the Sinharaja Forest in Matara District. Batakotuwala area lies about 8 km from Pallegama in Deniyaya towards Lankagama. No further information is available of this waterfall at the moment.
The 24m tall Bandigewatta Ella Falls, which eventually flows via tributaries to the Walawe River, derives its title from an ancient local ruler by the name of Bandiya.
The Bambarella Saree Ella Falls lies 5 minute drive from the Bambarella town and this waterfall takes form of a fall of a ladies saree thus its name. The fall consists of number of cascades and can be accessed on any vehicle.
The source of this 10m Bambarabotuwa Ella Fall is the Weweldola, which springs between the Bambarabotuwaugala mountains (1066m) and the Aluthwela Wisahena mountains (1264m).
This 32m Balla Mala Ella Fall, surrounded by numerous ecologically-importent plant life, is made up of three sections, and its 6m-deep plunge pool currently serves as a reservoir to the State Plantation sector.
At 45m-high and 3m-wide, the Balangoda Ranmudu Ella Falls is located near the Ranmuthu River, and cascades down a massive rock formation.
It is said that this massive Ethamala Ella waterfall fed by the Nilwala River was on a Elephant Migration Path and an elephant fell to death off this 52 meter fall. Thus this waterfall was called Ethamala Ella.
The 45m tall Arawakumbura Dunhinda Ella falls full even during the dry season and derives its name from the famous Dunhinda Falls where the spray forms a mist. The source of the fall is the Ibban Oya (river), a tributary of the Gal Oya (river). A number of valuable trees are found in the area, locally known as Suriya, Mara, Bulu and Nellie, but unfortunately colonisation has caused deforestation.
The 54m tall Arambe Ella Fall’s name originates from the ‘arama’ through which it flows – an area of jungle rich in resources such as food, wood, water and medicinal plants, traditionally utilised by hill country farmers.
The 30m-high Aradunu Ella Falls is so named because of its bow shape. According to folklore, King Walagamba (an ancient ruler of Sri Lanka) took refuge from south Indian invaders inside a cave found near the fall. There is also said to be a tunnel to the rear of the fall that leads up to Passara Raja Maha Vihara (temple).
The Aanda Ella Fall is 15m high and only exists during the rainy season. There are two theories as to how it got its name.
The Andawala Ella Fall flows from the Nayameruhinna mountain range and is 40m high. It is situated in the Andawela village, which is in the Nuwara Eliya district between Walapane and Hanguranketha. It can be found at the 31st mile post on the Kandy-Regala road. A convenient place to stay is the Hanguranketha rest-house, which is 50km from Kandy.
Kanneliya Anagimala Ella Falls lies in Galle District inside the Kaneliya Forest Reserve. From here, a 3 km trek leads you to the fall. This multi necklace waterfall is more lively in the moths of May –June.
The 9m Alupotha Ella Fall (Pathambara Ella Fall) derives its name from its location. It is also known as the Pathambara Falls (Slanted Falls) due to its physical attributes.
This 68m Alupola Ella Falls derives its name from a nearby tea estate. It is served by a brook beginning at Kalugaldova on the southern slope of the Bathurugala Mountain (1047m).
