Goraka Ella Waterfall
Goraka Ella Waterfall
Height :60 meters
District :Kegalle

Hidden off the Talduwa–Meewitigammana road, Goraka Ella is a quiet cascade reached through paddy fields and village footpaths. With rocky tiers, seasonal pools, and a peaceful rural setting, it rewards adventurous visitors who seek solitude beyond the usual tourist trails.

Goraka Ella cascades over a series of rocky ledges before plunging into a pool below. The waterfall is located along the Talduwa–Meewitigammana Road (B408), roughly 600 meters away in a straight line from the main road. Water from this stream is diverted upstream for cultivation and hydropower generation, significantly reducing the flow during the dry season.

Accessing the waterfall requires following a narrow footpath that runs through paddy fields and shallow streams used by local villagers. As there are no signboards or marked directions, visitors must ask villagers for guidance. This route leads to the base of the waterfall. Reaching the top involves climbing upstream through a rubber estate, where no clearly defined path exists.

At the top of the falls is a moderately deep pool that is suitable for bathing during the dry season. A second, shallower pool located further upstream is more appropriate for children. Bathing at the waterfall during the rainy season is not advisable, as sudden flash floods can occur without warning.

On-Site Safety and Etiquette

  • Stay on marked paths: Straying from designated trails can be dangerous due to unstable ground, slippery rocks, and hidden hazards, and it helps protect the local ecosystem.
  • Be conscious of the weather when bathing: Sudden flash floods can occur from rain upstream, so always monitor water levels.
  • Check depth and currents before entering the water: If the site is empty, consult a local villager about safe bathing areas.
  • Follow “Leave No Trace” principles: Take all your litter with you, including biodegradable waste such as fruit peels, which can harm wildlife.
  • Respect local culture: When passing through villages, dress modestly and be mindful of customs.
  • Be cautious with photography: Exercise care near cliffs and slippery rocks.
