The Handapan Ella Falls (23m in height), springs from the 1230m-high Handapan Ella Valley and is the starting point of the Rakwana River. A group of aquifers is also formed here. The northern slope of the valley is situated between Kabaragala Mountain and Sinharaja Mountain.
During the period of the Kandyan kingdon, this area was under the rule of chieftain Ehelepola Nileme. Local villagers believe that his treasure trove is hidden in the fall.
From Rakwana, take the Ratnapura – Deniyaya road and at the end of Buluthota Pass, it is a 4km trek along a difficult rocky path to the fall, which is located in the jungle near Paluna village. Alternatively, from Ratnapura take the road to Kalawana via Rambukka Rajawatte. Head towards Rakwana to see the fall.
The fall is 32km from Ratnapura. A convenient place to stay is the Rakwana rest-house, 7km away.
