Ganegoda Veheragodella Archaeological Site

The ancient monument site is located in the Ganegoda village, within the Ridigama Divisional Secretariat Division, in the Dodamgaslanda electoral division of the Kurunegala District in the North Western Province.

To reach this site, take the road from the Mallawapitiya junction towards Keppitigala, and after 27 kilometres, at the Ilukpitiya junction on the road running towards Kandy, proceed 2.5 kilometres from the front of the old Ambalama. From the Ganegoda junction, take the gravel road to the right.

In front of the old stupa, which exhibits early Anuradhapura period construction features, stands a monument with unique characteristics. It has two tiers of stone pillars, with some of the pillars in the surrounding area having fallen. Some of the pillar tops have caputs, and within the building, there is a stone pillar base, suggesting that this was a multi-story structure.

In the first quarter of 2024, the excavation section of the Kurunegala Project, managed by the Central Cultural Fund, initiated the preservation work of the remarkable ancient building located in the Veharagodella Archaeological Reserve. This conservation effort began in June 2024.

The head of the conservation section of the Regional Office (North Western) of the Department of Archaeology visited the site to provide instructions regarding the necessary preservation work.
