Gammana Bodhirukkarama Purana Viharaya is an ancient Buddhist temple with a Tampita Viharaya belonging to the Kandyan era. The temple lies about 2 km off Pothuhera lying between Polgahawela and Kurunegala. From Pothuhera take the Kuriyampola road which lies just a few meters before the railway crossing. Travel 2 km on this road to find the entrance arch to the Gammana Bodhirukkarama Viharaya on your left.
A Tampita Viharaya is a structure built on a wooden platform which rests on a number of stone stumps usually 3-4 feet tall. The roof is held by a structure built of timber and the walls are generally made of wattle and daub. The walls inside the chamber are more or less always covered in paintings drawn mainly in Kandyan style.
The Tampita Viharaya at Gammana Bodhirukkarama Purana Viharaya was declared a protected archaeological monument by the gazette dated 7th December 2001 and describes the site as below ;
“The ancient Tampita Vihara situated within the premises of Sri Bodhirukkaramaya in the village of Gammana of the Divisional Secretary’s Division of Polgahawela of Kurunegala District in the North Western Province“.
