Height : | 101 meters |
District : | Kandy |
The 101m Ratna Ella (Navarathna Ella) fall is the highest in the Kandy region and the stream that serves it irrigates the paddy fields of the surrounding villages.
Superstitious villagers say that there were seven vessels filled with precious stones hidden close to the fall, but that five have now been found. However, anyone attempting to find the final two will meet an untimely death at the bottom of the fall.
From Hasaka town go to “Ratna Ella wasama” village by following the direction boards to the waterfall. From this village, there is a pathway across paddy fields. After a few hundred meters, you will come across a water channel built to carry water to this area for paddy fields. Walk along this channel for 2.5 kilometres upstream. The hike is through a thick jungle and it is almost flat. Once you arrive at the beginning of the channel, you need to climb a few steps and walk further up to reach the bottom of the Ratna Ella.
There is another 30m waterfall in the vicinity called Kaluwa Wetuna Ella. This waterfall too can be reached on the same footpath.
