A Tampita Viharaya is a structure built on a wooden platform which rests on a number of stone stumps usually 3-4 feet tall. The roof is held by a structure built of timber and the walls are generally made of wattle and daub. The walls inside the chamber are more or less always covered in paintings drawn mainly in Kandyan style.
Gondeniya Purana Tampita Viharaya is such a temple lying off Kandugannawa in the Kandy district. The viharaya is built on 8 granite pillars. A wooden flight of steps take you to the entrance. Some of the paintings at the entrance including the guardian deities beside the door have been recently re-drawn with modern figures. A hall is built surrounding the Tampita Viharaya encompassing it completely.
Gondeniya Purana Tampita Viharaya can be reached by taking the Alagalla road from from Kadugannawa and turning off at the 3rd mile post (3 කණුව) junction. Please note that the Google Map marker is placed at the possible location of the temple.
