In Udathalawinna Purana Bomalu Viharaya lies a Tampita Viharaya built during the Kandyan era, less than 10 kilometres away from Kandy. A Tampita Viharaya is a structure built on a wooden platform which rests on a number of stone stumps usually 3-4 feet tall. The roof is held by a structure built of timber and the walls are generally made of wattle and daub. The walls inside the chamber are more or less always covered in paintings drawn mainly in Kandyan style.
You can reach Udathalawinna through Katugastota. Cross the bridge over Mahaweli Ganga take the Madawala road for 2 km and reach Nawayalathenna junction on the border of Mahaweli Ganga. Turn to Jumbugahapitiya road from this junction and travel 1 km to reach the “Y” junction at Pallethalawinna. Take the upper road and travel a further 1 km to reach the temple which lies beyond a paddy field.

Driving Directions to Udathalawinna Purana Bomalu Tampita Viharaya
Kandy can be reached from Colombo on the old Colombo – Kandy road (option 1) which is scenic but heavy in traffic, especially on Fridays and Sundays. However, the new Central Expressway (option 2) has opened up a new route which is longer but less cumbersome.
