
The Anurādhapura-period archaeological site near Kayaṅkerni School in Vakarai features five short stone pillars from a three-row structure. Characterized by distinct chisel marks, the palm-covered site also contains scattered broken pillars, ancient roof tiles, and stone slabs.
The archaeological site near Kayaṅkerni School is located in the village of Kayaṅkerni, within the Grāma Niladhāri Division of Kayaṅkerni 211-A, in the Divisional Secretariat Division of Kōrale Pattu North (Vakarai).
Access Route
Traveling from Nāvaladi towards Trincomalee along the A15 road, continue past the Kayaṅkerni Bridge and proceed approximately 200 meters (650 feet) along the school road. The site is situated about 200 meters (650 feet) further along the road adjacent to the school.
Historical Background
This site contains the remains of building structures displaying architectural characteristics consistent with the Anurādhapura period. This identification is supported by the nature of the stone pillars and chisel marks, as well as the stone slabs and fragments of roof tiles discovered at the location.
Location and Nature of Archaeological Evidence
The site is situated within an area covered by palm trees and contains short stone pillars measuring approximately 25 centimeters (9.8 inches) in height. Five pillars belonging to what were originally three rows of supporting pillars can still be identified as part of the structure.
In addition, broken fragments of stone pillars are scattered across the ground. Ancient roof tile fragments and stone slabs bearing oval-shaped chisel holes can also be identified among the archaeological remains.
