Pallegama is situated within the Harispattuwa Divisional Secretariat area. The Pallegama Ambalama stands next to the expansive Pallegama Thalawa paddy fields. Spanning over 60 acres, these fertile lands were cultivated for two seasons annually since the days of ancient kings. However, in recent times, they have fallen into disuse and remain uncultivated due to water scarcity.
To reach this Ambalama, you have to travel 4 km on the Katugastota road from Getambe in Kandy, turn to Jayanthi Mawatha and travel 1.2 km on this road to Pallegama Thalawa paddy fields.
If you’re heading out on a trip to Pallegama Ambalama, make sure to stop by the Sellavali Rajamaha Viharaya, also called the Welamada Viharaya, nestled amidst lush paddy fields. This serene temple is home to an impressive image house dating back to the Kandyan era. Unlike the typical Buddha statues that feature a halo, the statue here sits on a coiled cobra, with the serpent’s hood forming a unique backdrop in place of the halo. The image house itself resembles an art gallery, showcasing the distinct artistic style of the Kandyan period.
** need confirmation if this ambalama is destroyed or still in existence **
