You can find the ruins of a stupa mound a short distance from the Kappalthurai Ayurveda Hospital in the 229B Sumedhankarapura Grama Niladhari division, within the Town and Gravets Divisional Secretariat of the Trincomalee District.

The Department of Archaeology has named this site and its surroundings the Saradhapura ruins. While it hasn’t been gazetted, it has been identified as a Grade C archaeological site.

This stupa mound is located about 500 meters towards town from the 187/6 culvert on the Trincomalee-Kantalai road. You can see it by taking the road in front of the new water tank being built by the National Water Supply and Drainage Board, traveling about 250 meters, and then following the canal northeast for about 50 meters. The mound is located at the top of the canal.

Likely belonging to the Early Anuradhapura period, this stupa mound has been dug up and damaged in two places by treasure hunters. The excavation is about 12 feet wide and 8 feet deep, with bricks scattered all around the mound.

The stupa mound is about 12 feet high. Based on the amount of scattered bricks and soil, the stupa’s diameter would have been about 60 feet. Other than bricks and molding stones, no other ruins were found nearby.
