Although the origin of the Hanguranketha Pattini Devalaya is unknown, this devalaya was in existence during the reign of King Rajasinghe II (1635 – 1687) who is reported to have carried out renovations at this site.
During the great Uva Wellassa Rebellion in 1818 against the British occupation of the country, this devalaya had been used by the British but no major damages seems to have occurred to the buildings.
There are carved stone tablets of elephants and guards fixed to the outer and inner walls of the Devale. It also has a beautiful roof Vahalkada. At the entrance to the shrine, the anklets of goddess Pattini are secured in the sanctum as the object of worship.
The Pattini Devalaya building, kitchen, Vahalkada and the protective wall around the devalaya have been named as protected monuments by the Department of Archaeology.
