Panama is an ancient  coastal village in the Eastern Province of Sri Lanka, located 126 kilometers south of Batticaloa and 12 km south of Arugam Bay. It is the last populated settlement in the southernmost part of the province, within the Ampara District.

Along the northern border of Panama along the edges of the Panama lagoon in the area known as Abayasinghepura lies the sandy road which leads to the Panama fishing village and the lagoon mouth. Ruins of an ancient buddhist civilization  on one of the rocky outcrops along the road with a drip ledge cave and other artifacts has been discovered and designated as a protected archaeological site by the Government with the Gazette issued on 10th October 2014, and describes the location as follows;

“The cave and surrounding area with archaeological evidences at Abayasinghepura (on the road leads to fisheries village and lagoon) belonging to Abayasinghepura village in Grama Niladari Division No. PP 03 Panama West in the Divisional Secretary’s Division, Lahugala in Ampara District in Eastern Province. (latitude 06º 76653′ N and longitude 081º 81470’E).”

GPS location is marked based on the above description. However it is recommended to get directions to this place from a party familiar  with the area before attempting to visit the place.
