Hingurana,  which belongs to the Ampara district has been part of the ancient Digamdulla Kingdom which had flourished since the pre – christian era.

The Hingurana Uththara Jayamaha Viharaya which lies behind the Gal Oya Plantations Sugar factory and is built upon a ancient temple complex belonging to the Digamadulla Kingdom. Unfortunately this temple has been modernized losing most of its antiquity.  Due to the ancient drip ledge cave with inscriptions and other few artifacts, this temple has been declared as a protected archaeological site by the Government with the Gazette issued on 26th December 2014, and describes the location as follows ;

“Caves with drip ledges and inscriptions belonging to the premises of Uththara Jayamaha Vihara situated in Hingurana village in Grama Niladhari Division No. W/27/F, Karalewa in the Divisional Secretary’s Division, Damana in Ampara District in Eastern Province. (Latitude 07º22´ 14.5´´ N and longitude 81º67´ 93.3´´ E).”
