Two locations close to each other in the village of Bunteka in the Bakkiela area in Ampara have been identified and declared as a protected archaeological site by the Government with the Gazette issued on 26th December 2014. The first site consists of ruins of ancient buildings with granite pillars. The other site lies about 100 meters away in the middle of a paddy field and also consists of ruins of stone pillars belonging to an ancient building, probably of the same monastic complex.
The two sites are described in the gazette as follows ;
“Site of the ruins of buildings with stone pillars in Rajagalathenna 80 Bunteka village situated in Grama Niladhari Division No. W/104/3, Rajagalathenna North in the Divisional Secretary’s Division, Uhana in Ampara District in Eastern Province. (Latitude 07º28´ 33´´ N and longitude 081º38´ 37´´ E)”
“Site where ruins of buildings are scattered with stone pillars in Rajagalathenna 80 Bunteka village situated in Grama Niladhari Division No. W/104/3, Rajagalathenna North in the Divisional Secretary’s Division, Uhana in Ampara District in Eastern Province. (Latitude 07º28´ 36´´ N and longitude 081º38´ 37´´ E).”
