Walathapitiya Archaeological Ruins – වලතාපිටිය පුරාවිද්යා භූමිය

A rock plain with signs of being an ancient quarry on the lake road near the Walathapitiya Reservoir has been declared as a protected archaeological site by the Government with the Gazette issued on 26th December 2014, and describes the location as follows ;
“Rock plane with sign of quarry at Walathapitiya lake road belonging to old Walathapitiya Village situated in Grama Niladhari Division No. 89B, Walathapitiya 01 in the Divisional Secretary’s Division, Sammanthurei in Ampara District in Eastern Province. (Latitude 07º18´ 42.6´´ N and longitude 081º43´ 17.7´´ E).”
GPS location is marked based on the above description. However it is recommended to get directions to the site beforehand. The area dominated by non Buddhist community and most might be reluctant to expose such archaeology locations.
