In Sri Lanka, an “ambalama” refers to a traditional wayside resting place or shelter typically found in rural areas. These structures have significant historical and cultural heritage and have played a crucial role in the country’s history.

Ambalamas were originally established as rest stops for weary travelers, traders, pilgrims, and others traversing the ancient road networks of Sri Lanka. These roadside shelters were particularly common along major trade routes and pilgrimage paths connecting important towns and religious sites.

Ambalamas typically feature a simple open pavilion design, often with a thatched roof supported by wooden pillars or stone columns. The open layout allowed for good airflow, providing relief from the tropical heat. Some ambalamas may have more elaborate carvings and decorations, showcasing traditional Sri Lankan craftsmanship.

These structures also served as meeting places for local communities, fostering social interactions and cultural exchanges. They were not only used for resting but also for discussions, storytelling, and other communal activities.

Ambalamas built during later periods were simple utilitarian buildings. They were mostly built near or at large paddy fields mainly intended for the farmers and villagers to gather.

Ihala Kotuwella Ambalama in Pannala is one such simple ambalama lying near a large paddy field by a water steam adjoining the Kotuwella road. Its a brick and mortar square building with half walls. The half walls would have been used as benches as there is no seating inside the Ambalama.

The roof is held on 8 brick pillars and the rear wall. According the plaque on the building, this Ambalama has been build in 1916 by a pious lady name Dingiri.
