World War Memorial in Army Training School in Diyatalawa

This cenotaph war memorial to commemorate war heroes in the 1st World War is situated in a military camp at the Army Volunteer Forces Training School in Diyatalawa. This memorial has been constructed to commemorate 78 military personnel of the Ceylon Planters Rifle Corps who died in the 1st World War.

This monument is 15 ft in height, and decorative plaques are made of a special metal and contain the names of the fallen heroes. Also, there is a metallic wreath depicting branches of a tea plant with the epitaph in the Latin language “Pro Patria Mori” fixed to the monument, the meaning being “To die for one’s country.” This quote has been taken from the Roman Lyrical poet Horace’s Odes.

There is an emblem on this monument stating in Latin “Unitas Salus Nostra” the meaning of which is “Unity, our salvation.” “Salus” is the name of a Roman Goddess for safety and salvation. This motto was used on the headgear of the soldiers of the Ceylon Planters Rifle Corps.

There is a saying below the emblem “In proud memory of those members of the contingent company Ceylon Planters Rifle Corps, who gave their lives for their country during the Great War 1914-1918. Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.” This quote is taken from the Bible which was revised by King James I of England.

This well-maintained memorial is a tourist attraction where they come to pay homage to the dear departed, though it is little known. Permission has to be obtained from the Army authorities to visit this site.
