The Legend of the St. Anne Statue

The origin of the statue of St. Anne dates back centuries and is linked to a fascinating legend recorded by Udugama (1983, pp. 65–66). In the early 17th century, a wealthy French trader was sailing aboard a schooner named “St. Anne” from Galle to Kalpitiya, carrying a cargo of goods. However, disaster struck when the vessel collided with a rock near Kalpitiya, resulting in a shipwreck.

Among the belongings on board was a statue of St. Anne. In their moment of despair, the French trader and his crew knelt in prayer, seeking her divine intervention. Miraculously, though the schooner was destroyed, they safely made it to Thalawila. Grateful for their survival, the trader placed the statue in the hollow of a Banyan tree and vowed to build a church in St. Anne’s honor if he was able to return home safely and regain his prosperity.

The Vision of the Portuguese Traveler

Some time later, a Portuguese traveler, weary from his unsuccessful search for a livelihood in Colombo, was making his way back along the coast when he stopped to rest under a large tree in Talawila—the very site of the present church. As he slept, he dreamed of an illuminated image at the base of the tree, with burning tapers on either side. Upon waking, he was astonished to see the very same statue in front of him.

Overwhelmed, he began to pray aloud, when suddenly he was struck by a brilliant light. In that moment, St. Anne herself appeared before him, revealing that the image represented her and instructing him to build a church in her name, preserving the sacred relic. Deeply moved, the traveler set out to construct a small chapel.

St. Anne is said to have appeared to him again, leaving behind gold coins that allowed him to return to his homeland and raise funds for a permanent church at Talawila. Following a third vision, he proceeded to build an even larger structure in accordance with her divine guidance.

Meanwhile, the French trader, having safely returned home and regained his fortune, honored his vow by returning to Talawila. Upon discovering that a church had already been built at the site, he donated a significant sum and continued to visit the shrine annually.

Sacred Relics and Physical Evidence

The banyan tree standing in front of the church today is believed to be the very same one that sheltered both the shipwrecked Frenchman and his crew, as well as the weary Portuguese traveler.

The statue currently housed in the church is believed to be the same one discovered by the Portuguese man centuries ago. In an intriguing twist of fate, exactly 100 years after the present church was constructed, the remains of a shipwreck surfaced in 1943. Many who visited the site believed it to be the very vessel that had once carried the statue of St. Anne, further cementing the legend in local tradition.
