At the ancient Thalgaspitiya Deniyathanna Viharaya, a preserved Tampita Viharaya built during the Kandyan era can be found.  A Tampita Viharaya is a structure built on a wooden platform which rests on a number of stone stumps usually 3-4 feet tall. The roof is held by a structure built of timber and the walls are generally made of wattle and daub. The walls inside the chamber are more or less always covered in paintings drawn mainly in Kandyan style.

The Tampita Viharaya at Deniyathanna Viharaya in the Kegalle District is built on 20 granite pillar stumps. A narrow circumambulating path is built around the image house with a protective fence. There are no murals on the outer wall of the image house. There are 3 access doors to the image house from 3 sides other than the rear.

The entrance to the image house of the Tampita Viharaya at Deniyathanna is made in the form of Chandrawanka. Two guardian deities stand beside the door. At the top of the entrance is a unique Makara Torana (Dragons Arch). Generally, the dragons on the sides are moulded in a way that they are looking upwards or towards the Kimbisi Muhuna at the top. But you will find the two dragons on this arch, looking straight forward at you with a somewhat comical grin.

Morathota Dhammarakkandha Sangharaja (මොරතොට ධම්මක්ඛන්‍ධ සංඝරාජ) Thero was the royal educator of the Kandyan king Rajadhi Rajasinghe (1781 – 1798). Morathota Sangharaja Himi had the habit of maintaining a journal and he noted that the Deniyathanna Temple was donated with the crop from the Thalgaspitiya rice fields in 1797.

The Deniyathanna Viharaya was declared a protected archaeology monument by the gazette dated 8 July 2005.

You can reach the Deniyethanna Viharaya from Mawanella through Hakurugammana junction (12km) in Aranayake. Turn left from the junction and cross the Maha Oya. Continue on this road for 3 km to reach this temple.
