Bayawa Rajamaha Viharaya is an ancient temple lying in Avulegama between Nikaweratiya and Padeniya in Kurunegala district. To reach the temple from Kurunegala, take the Padeniya road and travel 4 km from Padeniya junction toward Putlam where you will reach the Avulegama junction. From here take the right turn onto Sri Seelananda Mawatha. Travel 900 meters to reach this temple.

The significance of this temple is the Tampita Viharaya built during the Kandyan era.  A Tampita Viharaya is a structure built on a wooden platform which rests on a number of stone stumps usually 3-4 feet tall. The roof is held by a structure built of timber and the walls are generally made of wattle and daub. The walls inside the chamber are more or less always covered in paintings drawn mainly in Kandyan style.

The Tampita Viharaya at the Bayawa Rajamaha Viharaya has been restored by the archaeological department in 2012.
