Kolambalamulla Bodhirukkharama Purana Pothgul Tampita Viharaya

Kolambalamulla Bodhirukkharama Purana Pothgul Viharaya is an ancient temple located in Talawattegedara, Kurunegala district, situated between Polgahawela and Pothuhera.

You can reach the temple via two main routes from Polgahawela:

Option 1: Travel 3 km towards Kurunegala from the Polgahawela junction until you reach Kahawatte Ela. Turn onto Bemmullegedara road and continue for 2.5 km to Udapola junction. From there, take the Talawattegedara road and travel another 3.5 km to arrive at the temple.

Option 2: Alternatively, take the Polgahawela – Kurunegala road for 6 km until Hondella Junction, then turn towards Talawattegedara. You will cross the railway line after 2 km on this road, and the temple is located approximately 500 meters further along this road.

The temple is home to a Tampita Viharaya, a traditional structure from the Kandyan era. A Tampita Viharaya is typically built on a wooden platform supported by several stone stumps, usually 3-4 feet in height. The roof is held up by a timber frame, and the walls are generally constructed from wattle and daub. The interior walls of the chamber are almost always adorned with paintings, primarily in the Kandyan style.

This Tampita Viharaya was officially declared a protected archaeological monument by a gazette published on December 7th, 2001. It is recognized as “The ancient Tampita Vihara situated within the premises of Bodhirukkharama purana Pothgul Vihara in the village of Thalawattegedera of the Divisional Secretary’s Division of Polgahawela of Kurunegala District in the North Western Province.”
