Pungudutivu is an island in the Jaffna peninsula separated from the mainland from the east by a shallow channel approximately 3.5 km away. A 3.8 km causeway connects this island to the mainland. A 1.75 km wide channel to Nainativu separates the island from the west.

The Pungudutivu lighthouse is located on the most southern corner of the Pungudutivu Island. Its structure is odd. It’s a square tower with a larger base and the top has a square platform.

In the Jaffna peninsula lies a total of 4 lighthouses along with numerous forts built by our colonial masters to protect the precious cargo moving out of Pearl Island. On the far left of the northern border lies the Kovilan Point Lighthouse on the Karaitivu Island. Next is the Kankesanthure Lighthouse (Kankesanthurai Lighthouse) and at the far right lies the Point Padro lighthouse. Othe south of the Jaffna peninsula lies this rather odd lighthouse at Pungudutivu Island.

Not much of information is available on the Pungudutivu Lighthouse.  This lighthouse is listed by NGA with focal plane 11 m (36 ft); white flash every 5 s. This light is described by NGA as a “stone building”.  An Indian Notice to Mariners reported this light deactivated in September 2016 but it was probably inactive for some time before that.  (Rowlett , 2022).

This tower is described as a white stone tower 25 feet high (Sailing Directions for the West Coast of India from point calimere to Cape Monze including the island of ceylon and the Maldive and Laccadive Islands 1942) and as a white stone beacon 25 feet high, with its summit 35 feet above high water (West Coast of India Pilot: From point calimere to Cape Monze, including Ceylon, pamban pass, and Palk Gulf 1920).
