About six kilometers from Badalkumbura on the way to Buttala, you will find the historic Veheragoda Purana Rajamaha Viharaya. The temple’s most notable structure is the ancient Budu Ge (image house), which dates back to the Kandyan era.
Despite its small size, the image house resembles an art gallery frozen in time. Its entrance features a sturdy wooden door frame adorned with carvings along the top bar. The frame and door, once painted blue, now show signs of fading with time. The design of the frame follows the Suryawanka style, while the doors also bear intricate carvings at the top. Flanking the entrance are two clay-molded guardian deities (“Doratupala”), each holding a sword.
The ‘Makara Thorana’ (dragon arch) above the door frame is not particularly elaborate but stands out for its unique design. The ‘Kimbisi Muhuna’ features two upright dragon faces, adding to its distinctiveness.
The present-day stupa has been constructed around the remains of an ancient, dilapidated stupa mound. Additionally, several granite pillars are scattered throughout the temple premises, hinting at the site’s historical significance.
