Six kilometers from Badalkumbura towards Buttala lies the ancient Veheragoda Purana Rajamaha Viharaya. The most significant building of the temple is the ancient Budu Ge (image house) built during the Kandyan era.
Although quite small, this image house looks as a art gallery in a time capsule. The entrance to the image house is made of a heavy wooden door frame. The top bar of the frame shows some carvings. A blue paint has been used to paint the door and its frame. The paint too is now fading. The frame is built to the design of Suryawanka. The doors too show some carvings at the top. Beside the door stands tow guardian deities (“Doratupala”) figures carrying swards molded in clay.
The ‘Makara Thorana’ (dragon arch) at the top of the door frame is not a elaborate design but unique. The ‘Kimbisi Muhuna’ is made of joining two standing dragons faces.
The stupa which is seen now has been build surrounding the ancient dilapidated stupa mound. In addition you will find granite pillars scattered around the temple premises.
