
Bibile Kokunnewa Purana Viharaya is an ancient temple in Monaragala district with a Tampita Viharaya built during the Kandyan era. This temple lie on the Bibile – Inginiyagala road, just 6.5 km off Bibile town.
Tampita Viharaya is a structure built on a wooden platform which rests on number of stone stumps usually 3-4 feet tall. The roof is held by a structure built of timber and the walls are generally made of wattle and daub.
The Tampita Viharaya at Kokunnewa Purana Viharaya was declared as an protected archaeological site by the gazette dated 23rd January 2009 and is described as follows ;
“The tempitta Vihare belonging to the Kokunnewa Vihare premises situated in the village of Kokunnewa in the Divisional Secretary’s Division of Bibile, in the Moneragala District, Uva Province”
