The Batticaloa lagoon comprises several islands within it, namely Puliyantheevu, Mantheevu, Erumaitheevu (Buffalo Island), Sirayatheevu and Elubutheevu (Bone Island). Of these islands, Puliyantheevu is the most important island as it holds central city of the Batticaloa.
The Bone Island was initially named Bone’s Island. This is a barren, uninhabited tiny island with a circumference of 504 meters and a area of 13,500 square meters (3.33 acres) pleasantly situated close the mouth of the Batticaloa lagoon.
Its name is derived from the name of British Assistant Government Agent from1833 to 1837, J.A. Bone of Eastern Province of Sri Lanka. He had built a small bungalow on the island and made it a place for occasional resort (Canagaratnam, 1921).
Bone island is disconnected from the mainland and is only accessable by boat. Its used as resting place for the fisherman in the area but becoming a destination for tourists who is keen on exploring bare landscapes of Batticaloa.
