Hewainna is a village of the old kingdom of Sitawaka. According to legend this village has been used by the king Sitawaka Rajasinghe (1581 – 1592) to assemble his forces (Hewayan) to fight against the Portugues who had already captured the Kotte kingdom.

One of the most interesting facts of this village is the ancient hidden underground tunnels. According to legend these tunnels have been built by forces of the king Rajasinghe connecting the Sitawaka kingdom. These tunnels had been used to assemble forces secretly and to protect the sub kingdom as well. These tunnels are said to be sealed but tradition states of seven villagers who had travelled along these tunnels some years ago. They have followed a light and then had come across a cobra. Then they had turned back and come to the village. It is said all but one had died every seven days. One member of the expedition who had not revealed anything had survived.

A newspaper reported that some young adults in the village who had gone down a entrance of the tunnel. According to them the tunnel is about 10 feet high and splits in to multiple directions.

The road to the Hewainna village lies on the Labugama – Puwakpitiya road. About 500 meters on this road lies the popular Kumari Ella. Traveling another 250 meters along the same road, you can reach Hewainna Falls, a wide but small waterfall. The fall is evenly spread along the full length of the river and drops in 2 steps. The first one is about 1 meter in height and the second one is about 2 meters in height. Due to shallow nature of the river here, this is a ideal place for bathing.
